V.A. - The Best of Flipside Video Volume #5 (DVD)

Coming in at number five out seven in the "Best of" video series, this release features punk legends Youth Brigade and 7 seconds. Youth Brigade starts out the video with several different performances: Mendiola's Ballroom & riot Huntington Park '83, Olympic Auditorium/LA 03/02/84, and Perkin's Palace/Pasadena 04/84. They play through many of their original hits including "Sink With California," "Sound & Fury," and "What are You Fighting For." I saw Youth Brigade at the House of Blues last year and the singer, Shawn Stern, still looks the same after all these years, even though it looks like he's playing with a new lineup.

Following Youth Brigade is an equally youthful 7 Seconds, also performing live at several different locations: Olympic Auditorium 03/84, Sun Valley Sportsmen's Center 11/84 and Skateway/Placentia 11/8/85. Dawning his football eyeliner, Kevin Seconds leads the band through some for my favorite songs like "Young til I Die," "Regress, No Way" and "Out of Touch."

Like Target Video, Flipside Video was known for their quality video productions. The audio is great for the era, and I highly recommend this video if your a fan of these bands. Like my other posts, this video is currently out-of-print, and I doubt this will ever be released via DVD. Ironically, I did find a DVD copy of this on EBAY complete with artwork and information (it looks commercial), although I doubt it was an authorized duplication (made in Canada).-80spunkvideos.blogspot.com-

7 Seconds - Committed For Life

Thanks to the way hardcore records are distributed in the malls of suburban America, I got into 7 SECONDS ass-backwards, buying Walk Together Rock Together first, then The Crew, and years later, the alt.music.hardcore LP. Each record I bought from this band has been better, so I am really thirsting to hear their earliest demos. Anyways, of the three records on alt.music.hardcore, the Committed for Life EP is the best by far. They waste no time with "5 Years of Lies," no intro or anything, just straight into fast hardcore that is decidedly lo-fi, and Kevin's vocals are not yet as sappy as they would be in later years. "Drug Control" and "Bottomless Pit" are ok, wish I couldn't make out the lyrics, though, but then you run into two absolute classics of the genre: "Fight Your Own Fight" and the title track. Honestly I would stack these two songs against any other two songs from all of US hardcore in the 80's. "This is the Angry" is your basic whoa-whoa 7 SECONDS song, and "Aggro" sounds like it could have been on The Crew. All the songs on this are good, but the first song, and the two powerhouses in the middle, really ought to be heard.--KFTH

7 Seconds - Walk Together Rock Together

For years Kevin Seconds (Lead Singer of 7 Seconds) had been imitating Ian Mackaye's old band Minor Threat. So what happened when Ian produced 7 Seconds in the same studio where Minor Threat recorded? They made the best 7 Seconds album ever recorded, and one of the defining moments in hardcore and punk. Funny thing is, this album doesn't sound much like Minor Threat. It's melodic and upbeat, and way too positive for MT. It's even got the Misfits-like singalongs but without the cheesy goth lyrics. The album is brilliant from start to finish. The production is crisp and live sounding. Ian even sings along in the choruses. 99 Red Balloons is great but the originals are better--In Your Face, Strength, Remains to be Seen, and the extra tracks too--Regress No Way and the remake of their old classic, We're Gonna Fight. The extra live stuff is the much better than the live tracks provided on The Crew.

Hardcore is easy to play but difficult to pulloff without being cheesy or severely mediocre. 7 Seconds for a brief time were one of the best punk bands around--their music was honest and heartfelt. After this album 7 Seconds changed their sound, completely abandoning hardcore for the next decade. If you've never heard them and you're curious, this is the place to start. 7 Seconds - Old School

Originally recorded in 1983 when they were still a 3-piece, the songs from this session were supposed to be put out as 7 Seconds' first LP, United We Stand, but for some reason that never happened and most of this stuff was left to collect dust until 1989. That's too bad because the songs on here are way better than any of the versions that were later re-recorded for The Crew LP. The songs sound way more pissed off (the cuss words that didn't appear on later versions of some of the songs help a little to fuel that opinion) and Kevin's guitar playing is just really intense sounding, complete with his own little thrown-in 2-second noodling licks on a few songs. Did I mention that this stuff is played way faster than the later versions? Also interesting (or embarrassing) to a 7 Seconds diehard like me is the song "No Class, No Way", which has some pretty moronic lyrics about some girl who's "just a whore, with nothing in [her] head." Eventually the guys wised up a little and the song was later re-written and the title changed to "Regress No Way". Three songs from this session were later released on the Blasts From The Past EP, leaving "Heavy Metal Jocks", a song decrying those god damn meatheads who listen to AC/DC (yeah, fuck them... but AC/DC rules), as the only officially previously unreleased song on this. This is the definitive 7 Seconds record, every songs on here is gem (regardless of any stupid lyrics) and it's too bad their first LP turned out to be the rather weak sounding (in comparison to this) The Crew LP. Oh yeah, did I mention how weak The Crew was!? (Ok, so this record was my first ever 7 Seconds purchase and that's what ruined The Crew for me.)
