No Core Tape - Various Artists

Four very fast and forceful thrash bands from North Carolina: COLCOR sounds like a wild thrashed-out Meatmen. NO LABELS is ultrafast thrash like Minor Threat meets Husker Du. NO ROCK STARS sounds like Husker Du gone thrash. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY has a singer who sounds a lot like Henry of Black Flag, over hot ultraspeed thrash like Gang Green. Very intense stuff, even more remarkable from a place that didn't have a HC scene in 1981. Unlike a lot of bands that just lash out at safe targets like Reagan or nuclear war, these bands are characterized by sharp, biting lyrics that attack stupidity not only in society at large, but within the scene as well. No smug conformity from these guys.

Infest - Slave (LP)

Infest is an influential hardcore punk band, formed in September 1986 by Joe Denunzio, Matt Domino, Dave Ring and Chris Clift. Infest, while not coining the term power violence, were definitely pioneers of it. The Los Angeles quartet blended the ethos, speed and song structure of straight edge hardcore, along with the aggression and anger of bands like Negative Approach and Negative FX creating a style emulated by many and an energy captured by few. Joe Denunzio’s vocals exhibited pure angst, with lyrical content about conformity, war, scene politics and socio-political issues, mostly delivered in an accusational assault.

This Swiss-released LP of this American HC band contains all the songs first issued on the band's self-titled 7" released earlier the same year (1988) and 10 extra tracks.

The Effigies - Remain Nonvieweble

For those of you that don't know, the Effigies are the greatest punk rock/hardcore band to ever come out of Chicago. This career retrospective compiles all of their classic songs onto one disc, making it an essential purchase for any fan of punk music. Not only does this band write great songs, but they know how to play them as well. The Effigies are very gifted and creative musicians, as there are a variety of different musical influences present on this album, yet it all seems to fit nicely together.

"Security" is easily one of the catchiest anthems in punk rock history; the song blends both funk and hard rock through a punk blender. "Body Bag" and "Quota" are dark, hardcore punk at it's finest, while "Haunted Town" and "We're Da Machine" are a bit catchier and no less intense. "Hand Signals," on the other hand, is a heavy and dark rocker.

DYS - Brotherhood

DYS ("Department of Youth Services"), along with fellow band SSD, was the backbone of the so-called "Boston Crew" - a group of guys who lifted weights, ate lots of red meat, and advocated the straight edge. DYS formed around singer Dave Smalley, a Washington DC native attending school in Boston, and bassist Jon Anastas, previously of Decadence (see the This Is Boston Not L.A. comp). The band released a classic 12" in 1983 on SSD's XClaim label and played shows in Boston and elsewhere on the East Coast.

The Burnt - Where's My Head?

THE BURNT were one of the earliest PUNK bands in New Jersey. Formed in 1979, they were influenced by bands such as THE RAMONES, DEAD BOYS, SHAM 69, and local bands like T.M.A.

Hailing from Midland Park (in beautiful Bergen County, NJ.), they started off playing local “bars” with Metal bands - they would pretend that they were a Metal band to get the gig - as bar owners never knew at that time “not” to have a Punk band - but quickly learned. The biggest haunt for THE BURNT - and the home of their now famous “Power Drinking” legacy, was JT’s in nearby Suffern, NY. But it didn’t take them long to hook up with The Brighton (in West Long Branch) and get noticed by Mark Chesley and MUTHA records.
In the early 1980’s, THE BURNT “Where’s My Head” LP became one of the first releases on the Mutha Label.

The Mob - Upset The System (EP)

The Mob was a hardcore punk band in NYC, in the early 1980s, and are credited as being "hardcore pioneers" of the era. Amid local press coverage at the time, in which 'hardcore punk' was seen as a violent and threatening alternative to the currently-trendy New Wave style, The Mob released two 7" vinyl EPs on their own 'Mob Style Records', and also appeared on the The Big Apple Rotten To The Core compilation, in 1982 and on vol. 2 in 1987

This 7" (Upset The System) has lots of energy and some unique songs. It's not polished, which is both good and bad I guess. The raw aspect definitely puts it way above their 1986 LP, but I think it would have been better if they were a little tighter... There's some good early NYHC-type stuff on here, specifically "Crucial Point" and "Dr. Butcher".

Gepopel - Paracide (EP)

For alot of people the GEPOPEL - PARACIDE 7 inch is one of the best early dutch HC/Punk records of all time. It was recorded in March 16, and mixed in May 14, 1985 and it was released on Die Hard Records. The only other material released by the band is an early split with Funeral Oration just before this in '85. They also have a couple tracks on two comps, one in 96 and the more known BEWARE OF THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING LP.
