Black SS - Foreign Object

Black Sheep Squadron, more commonly referred to as Black SS, are a hardcore punk rock juggernaut from Assault City, NY (that's Syracuse to you).

Black SS come from the school of Negative Approach, Uniform Choice and Kill Your Idols. They keep things short and to the point. Much like their influences, Black SS are not afraid to say what they think. They do not mince words or get all metaphorical about whatever is pissing them off. After releasing a handful of seven inches and splits, they have finally delivered their first proper full-length via Reaper Records. Foreign Object is a 12-song, 19-minute record that starts off fast and never slows down.

These guys have a bit of an obsession with professional wrestling, as evidenced by the album art on both the front and back cover. In the realm of hardcore punk, Black SS are equivalent to Abdullah The Butcher. They are pissed off, wild and out of control just like the wrestling legend. Except instead of taking a fork to the head of Terry Funk, Black SS rip through tunes like "Bonehead" and "Have Some Self Respect," which illustrate their frustration on the current state of society and today's punk scene.

The opener "Quick Fix" addresses the dependence that people put on drugs and alcohol for an easy solution to life's problems. Vocalist Chuck shouts "go ahead and self-medicate, when you wake up the problem's still there." Instead of coming off as just another preachy straight-edge band, Black SS bring up very real concerns about addiction that should apply to everyone.

Black SS are not afraid of getting political. "I Want Out," which may be the album's standout track, is a circle pit-inducing romp about feeling disenfranchised with the current administration running the good ol' USA. "Better You Than Me" takes a shot at the "support the troops" mentality. It's apparent that these guys are not feeling particulary sorry for those who volunteer to join the military and go off to war.

If you think hardcore should be all about breakdowns, spin kicks and mosh parts, Black SS probably aren't for you. On the other hand, if you're craving a band whose sound is remniscent of a time when hardcore wasn't sold at Hot Topic, this should be right up your alley. Foreign Object is a furious steel chair shot to the skull of today's hardcore scene. Take notice, because this is what hardcore punk rock should sound like.--PunkNews

Major Conflict - Sounds Like 1983

Formed from the ashes of Urban Waste, Major Conflict existed for a short time in the early-80's NYHC scene, and this aptly titled CD documents what one would have to assume is all of the band's recorded output, including their self-titled 7", apparently unreleased studio sessions, and several live tracks. The style? Basic 1983 hardcore with a pretty significant early punk rock tinge, fused into short songs that never really get too fast. The unreleased recording session has an understandably dated sound dominated by vocals over relatively thin guitars and a decently solid rhythm section, but the songwriting and performances are pretty damn strong, I have to say. On these particular outings the vocals are a bit gruffer at times, and the approach is more straightforward and punk rock oriented in terms of utilizing gang vocals and borderline "catchy" song structures (see "Still Far Away" especially) formed around simplistic chord progressions. You could actually probably even argue that there are elements of what has become more often tagged oi/street punk in some of these songs, notably "Fading Memory".

As far as the 7" is concerned, the sound quality is thicker and a little dirtier, while the songwriting is perhaps a bit less direct in that there's a little bit of subtle melody within the midpaced chord progressions, while lightly noisy leads keep things raw and unrefined within a heavier sort of general approach. "Not Just a Song", the only track herein that tops three minutes, even unexpectedly opens with a strange keyboard pulse before the tone changes and a driving surge comes in with a few grating trills that later give way to a pretty crunchy chord progression. The live tracks come from various classic settings, among them CBGB's and A7, and despite varying recording sources (one of which is a mere handheld tape recorder), the live tracks all sound almost shockingly tolerable - if not effective.

Included are takes on some of the studio tracks, as well as otherwise undocumented material such as "No 1 Man System" and "No Patience", so for once, I have to say, this is a collection where the live tracks are actually a great inclusion. Very nice. The packaging keeps things simple with some black and white band photos, most of the lyrics, and several contributors' liner notes trying their best to express just how different a world it was for hardcore/punk in New York in 1983 as compared to today (a point further nailed home by the brief CD-Rom video for "NYC", which shows the delis and vacant lots and such that now exist in the former homes of classic New York venues). Despite that fact, or perhaps because of it, most of the lyrical themes are almost identical to today's hardcore, dealing with staying true and doing things for yourself, inner city violence, frustrations, etc. "Cigarette in one hand bottle of beer in the other, Living in a world of fear go tell it to another, Waiting for a major change, Trying to survive in this life..."

This is the first CD of this nature that I've heard from Mad at the World, and I have to commend them on expertly handling matters here, so I'd be really curious to see what else they've done (or plan to do) in this realm, as they've got a great handle on how these types of things should be delivered. Those listeners with a soft spot for the obscure, or for this particular timeframe of hardcore/punk, would likely be very enthused about this one, so keep an eye out. Good work.

V.A. - Flex Your Head

The "Flex Your Head" compilation was released by D.C. independent punk label, DISCHORD, in 1982. If you are looking for an insight into the roots of Hardcore, this is it my friend.

DISCHORD RECORDS was founded by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson of MINOR THREAT to release records by their bands, friends bands, and to document the explosive D.C. punk music scene of the day. All of the important early D.C. punk bands (except for BAD BRAINS) appear on this compilation: TEEN IDLES (Ian and Jeff's first band), UNTOUCHABLES, STATE OF ALERT (the first band of HENRY ROLLINS, then known as Henry Garfield), MINOR THREAT (the most important HC band from the eastern US?: maybe), GOVERNMENT ISSUE, YOUTH BRIGADE (not the band from ANOTHER STATE OF MIND... this is the OTHER YOUTH BRIGADE), RED C, VOID, IRON CROSS, ARTIFICIAL PEACE, and DEADLINE.

Most of the recordings are a bit thin, but the adrenalized suburban kid angst cuts through. Highlights include the UNTOUCHABLES "nicfit" which was later covered by SONIC YOUTH, Henry Rollins singing "I Hate the Kids", the two MINOR THREAT classics, and the three VOID tracks (VOID being one of the most underrated HC bands of all time!)

The CD issue reprints all of the original lyric inserts from the LP, as well as the artwork from the four different album covers (the "wheat sleeve", the "violin sleeve", the "xxx sleeve", and the "guy wearing a hat" sleeve). If you enjoy any of the other bands listed, or have a historical interest in the roots of American Hardcore... this is a rocking little history lesson. D.C. punk 101.

R.A.M.B.O. - Wall Of Death The System

R.A.M.B.O, hail from Philadelphia and play heavy, fast, and thrashy hardcore that has great sing-alongs and mosh parts all over the place. Their lyrics span a variety of topics including riding bikes (U-Lock Justice), moshing (Bike, Skate, Mosh), riots (Wall Of Death The System), anarchy (Circle that A Motherfucker), religion (No Circle Pits In Heaven) and a whole bunch of other important shit.

This band stands for a lot of serious things, but also takes time to have fun, which is the way it should be. It’s been a while since a band was able to blend amazing music, intelligent (and funny) political lyrics, as well as a ton of anger so effortless. Their LP comes with a huge lyric booklet, filled to the brim with explanations and information, not to mention the incredible artwork of Mike Bukowski. The CD version features an 18 minute cd-rom video that has clips from a bunch of Rambo shows that are just a total fucking riot, literally! The band wears camo and stages huge riot re-enactments with kids in the pit dressed up as either cops or protestors..

Sublime - Second Hand Smoke

SECONDHAND SMOKE is a collection of previously unreleased tracks along with alternate and dub takes of currently available material. This limited edition release of SECOND HAND SMOKE is packaged with a t-shirt.

It is often said that the quickest way for an artist to become famous is to die. The obvious flip-side of this is that the artist doesn't get to enjoy the fruits of his labors. On SECOND-HAND SMOKE, the surviving Sublime members and long-time collaborator Miguel gather together some of their earliest demos along with more recent out-takes in a final tribute to their late leader, drug casualty Brad Nowell.

Comparing the earliest work on this release to the later hits, it's striking how far Nowell's songwriting had progressed. The band was just beginning to synthesize its diverse influences into something that was instantly recognizable as Sublime. The early songs range from the straight pop of "New Realization" to reggae ("Don't Push") to the blend of ska and hip hop that was their signature ("Garbage Grove"). On "April 29th 1992 (Leary)," Nowell explores the real motivation behind the LA riots from the partly-humorous, partly-serious point-of-view that would characterize the bulk of his work. One can only wonder how far Nowell would have taken his music had he not passed away just as he was entering his prime.

Sex Pistols - Live In Winterland (DVD)

Sex Pistol's Live In San Francisco Winterland Ballroom(14 Jan. 1978) .
The darkness brightens up and on stage bound The Sex Pistols. It is January 14th 1978, Winterland Garden, San Francisco. The Sex Pistols, on their first major US tour, play their set. Songs like God Save the Queen, Anarchy in the USA, Bodies, Holidays in the Sun and Pretty Vacant are blasted out. Contempt is in the eyes of Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious is totally wasted and later revealed his bass wasn't plugged in. The band play a tight a restrictive set which lasts just over 45 minutes. The encore is the son No Fun, which from the look of the band was how they thought of the concert. The song finishes and Johnny ends with the lingering words "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated...Ha Ha". The rest is history. The following morning the band more or less officially split, and for punk the same was true. When the Sex Pistols died, punk was not far behind. Buy this cassette as it is a priceless record of the only true punk band, all be it in their death throws. Videos such as this one and the film The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle should keep die hard fans satisfied until The Filth and the Fury is released.

Description: Nazi skinheads in Melbourne take out their anger on local Vietnamese, who are seen as threatening racial purity. Finally the Vietnamese have had enough and confront the skinheads in an all-out confrontation, sending the skinheads running. A woman who is prone to epileptic seizures joins the skins' merry band, and helps them on their run from justice, but is her affliction also a sign of impurity?

*This plot synopsis is taken from IMDB, but I don't feel the movie is mostly about weather or not Gabe is accepted or not, but rather the internal struggles that always seem to arise in extremist groups. This is a powerful and raw story about what drives people to extremism and how it often ends. Way better than the commercial and overrated "American History X" (sorry, but the comparison is unavoidable).

Description: A young Jewish man develops a fiercely anti-Semitic worldview. Based on the true story of a KKK member in the 1960s who was revealed to be Jewish by a New York Times reporter.

"The Believer" explores a Jewish student's private journey to understand the meaning of Judaism in his life. Set in New York City, the Plot follows a morally confused young adult struggling with the conflict between his beliefs and his heritage. "The Believer" examines themes of religion, family, and self-loathing. It is a psychological examination into the forces of intolerance, both on the individual and society as a whole.

Movies: Made In Britain

Director: Alan Clarke
Cast:
Tim Roth ... Trevor
Eric Richard ... Harry Parker
Bill Stewart ... Peter Clive
Terry Richards ... Errol
Sean Chapman ... Barry Giller

Description: First screened on ITV in 1983, Made in Britain was the third collaboration between Alan Clarke and screenwriter David Leland. The play focuses on teenager Trevor, a violent, racist skinhead who refuses to cooperate with any attempts by the courts or social workers to rehabilitate him.

In many respects, Trevor is an archetypal Alan Clarke character. Like Archer in Scum, he is a bright boy who sees himself as the victim of authoritarianism and believes he can beat the system by belligerence and defiance. His forthright but confused sense of pride in his white heritage is reminiscent of Stephen's notions of Englishness in Penda's Fen and, like a precursor to Bexy in The Firm, he is a personification of the dark underbelly of 1980s Britain.

Undermining established stereotypes of skinheads as mindless thugs, Trevor is intelligent and articulate, which ultimately makes him more frustrating for those who try to help him. In a key scene, a social worker demonstrates on a blackboard the trap of crime, prison and poverty that Trevor is walking into; Trevor is smart enough to understand but too angry to care. But brief insights behind his aggressive façade, reveal glimpses of a desperate individual and, obnoxious though Trevor undoubtedly is, it becomes hard not to pity him.

Formally, Made in Britain marked the start of the kinetic camera style that would dominate Clarke's later works. Always keen to bridge the gap between actors and audience and famously impatient when arranging complex tracking shots, Clarke's discovery of the Steadicam whilst making Made in Britain added a fluidity to the film and to subsequent dramas like Contact, Road, Christine, Elephant, and The Firm. Made in Britain was written as a companion piece to Leland's Rhino, the story of a disenfranchised young black girl, and the two plays were first broadcast on consecutive Sundays.
