The Oppressed - Skinhead Times 1982-1998

The Oppressed is a Welsh anti-fascist Oi! band that was formed in 1981 in Cardiff.
Most of the musicians in the band's various lineups were skinheads.
Throughout the band's career, the members (especially vocalist Roddy Moreno) openly expressed opposition to racism and fascism;
in their lyrics, interviews, on-stage comments and other actions.
In 1989, Moreno visited New York City and met many members of Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice (SHARP) members.
On his return to the United Kingdom, he started promoting SHARP ideals to British skinheads.
The band has also had ties to other anti-racist groups, such as Anti-Fascist Action.

The band's lead singer, Roddy Moreno, is a Cardiff City F.C. supporter.

Global Metal 2008 (DVD)

GLOBAL METAL, directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn set out to discover
how the West’s most maligned musical genre – heavy metal – has impacted
the world’s cultures beyond Europe and North America. The film follows
metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a whirlwind journey through
Asia, South America and the Middle East as he explores the underbelly
of the world’s emerging extreme music scenes — from Indonesian death
metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal. GLOBAL METAL
reveals a worldwide community of metalheads who aren’t just absorbing
metal from the West – they’re transforming it. Creating a new form of
cultural expression in societies dominated by conflict, corruption and
mass-consumerism.

Crass - Christ - The Album

Christ - The Album is Crass' fourth album, released in 1982. It was released as a boxed set double vinyl LP package, including one disk of new studio material and another, entitled Well Forked.. but not dead, featuring a live recording of their June 1981 gig at the 100 Club in London along with other studio tracks, demos and tape fragments.

The album also included a book, A Series Of Shock Slogans and Mindless Token Tantrums (which featured Penny Rimbaud's essay The Last of the Hippies [1], telling the story of the suspicious death of his friend Wally Hope) and a large size poster painted by Gee Vaucher.

The album took over a year to record, produce and mix, during which time the Falklands War had taken place. This caused Crass to fundamentally question their approach to making records, for as a group whose very reason for existing was to comment upon political issues, they felt they had been overtaken and made to appear redundant by real world events.

Subsequent releases, including the singles "How does it Feel to Be the Mother of A Thousand Dead" and "Sheep Farming in the Falklands" and the album Yes Sir, I Will saw the band strip their sound 'back to basics' and were issued as 'tactical responses' to political situations.

Re-releases of the album bear the line "With love to Steve Herman who died on the 4th of February 1989" on the back cover. Steve Herman was Crass' guitar player during their first few months.-Wikipedia-

Crass - Penis Envy

Named as a reference to some of Freud's ideas concerning sexuality, this release marked something of a departure from the somewhat 'macho', 'hardcore punk' image that The Feeding of the 5000 and its follow up Stations of the Crass had to some extent given the group, for it featured more obviously complex musical arrangements, as well as exclusively female vocals provided by Eve Libertine and Joy De Vivre (although Steve Ignorant remained a group member and is credited on the record sleeve as not on this recording). The album addressed feminist issues and once again attacked the institutions of 'the system' such as marriage and sexual repression.

One track, not actually listed on the album cover, was a deliberately sacharine (described in fact by the band themselves as pure, unadulterated shit) parody of a "MOR" love song entitled "Our Wedding". This was given away as a flexi disc with a teenage girl's romance magazine called Loving after having been offered it by an organisation calling itself Creative Recording And Sound Services (note the initials). A minor tabloid furore erupted once the hoax was revealed, with the News of the World going so far as to state that the album's title was "too obscene to print" (a leaflet giving the background to this Situationist-style prank was subsequently issued by the band). Now the disc is a collectors item fetching high prices on the collectors market.

During the mid 1980s copies of this album were seized, along with other records by Flux Of Pink Indians and The Dead Kennedys, by Greater Manchester Police from Eastern Bloc record shop, which was charged with displaying "Obscene Articles For Publication For Gain".-Wikipedia-

Chumbawamba - Tubthumper

Tubthumper is an album by the anarcho-punk band Chumbawamba, and is the album that catapulted them into the mainstream. Many of the tracks address specific social issues, such as homelessness, the Liverpool Dockers' Strike or racism. Tubthumper was the band's first major commercial success, and arguably their most successful to date, selling over 3 million units in the United States alone, largely on the strength of the smash hit lead single "Tubthumping". Cover design for the album was by Michael Calleia at Industrial Strength Design in New York City.

Tubthumper caused a huge upheaval in Chumbawamba's fan base, with many of their older fans feeling the band had trivialised all that they had stood for in signing to EMI. The band was targeted by many as being sell-outs and hypocrites, after having been sternly Do-it-Yourself (DIY) for their fifteen year history up until this point (when people cite this fact, however, they do tend to overlook that for many years, Chumbawamba were signed to a smaller commercial label, One Little Indian Records, and the fact that it was distributed by major label London Records).

The band's actions were made the subject of an EP released in 1998, entitled "The Anti-Chumbawamba EP". One of the songs from the EP is available to download on the Chumbawamba official website, with accompanying text from the band stating: "It's all true."

Dunstan Bruce and Danbert Nobacon are shown reading hate mail from various fans and ex-fans in the 2000 Chumbawamba documentary, "Well Done Now Sod Off". The letters are quite rude and severely critical of the actions undertaken by the band, with Nobacon having trouble finishing one letter and exclaiming his amazement at the harshness.

The band's official FAQ has the following to say on the subject: "We signed to EMI/Universal not because we'd been co-opted into the "If you can't beat capitalism... join it" school of thought, but because experience had taught us that in a capitalist environment almost every record company operates on capitalist principles. Our previous record label One Little Indian didn't have the evil symbolic significance of EMI BUT they were completely motivated by profit. Our [Chumbawamba's] position was that whoever we signed with would want us not for our ideas but for the potential profit, so we'd battle for a contract where we still had autonomy."

Chumbawamba - Anarchy

Anarchy is a 1994 album by anarcho-punk band Chumbawamba. Many of the tracks address specific social problems, such as homophobia, strikes or fascism.

Its graphic cover, depicting a baby's head emerging from a vagina, was deemed controversial upon release; and in the event, original copies were released in a plain brown wrapper. (Later reissues, however, displayed the cover uncensored.)

Battle Of Disarm - Peace

Battle of Disarm is a crust punk band from Isigawa, Japan. They originally formed over rising concerns on the cruel treatment of animals, & high usage of vivisection by major corporations. Since they first formed in 1989, they have refused to release any material on compact disk, in protest of the technological advances that has swept across Japan, which they say has lead to worldwide "corruption and murder". Other issues they have focused on is the disarming of nuclear weapons, by releasing songs like Disarm or Die! and , in concern that more bombings, like the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, might occur.

Ak-47 - The Badge Means You Suck (7'')

Here’s some more quality Texas punk for you to kick off a new week. AK-47 were a 5 piece from Houston that released one 1980 single featuring the incendiary anti-cop rant “The Badge Means You Suck”. A listen to this track and Really Red’s “Teaching You The Fear”* helps to paint quite an ugly picture of Houston cops. In fact, this single caused such a ruckus that the Houston PD actually sought to sue the band. According to Guitarist:

Within a week of the single’s release, the Houston Police Officer’s Association filed a one-million-dollar lawsuit. Jim, Tim, and Sleepy quit the band the next day. Because we had all used pseudonyms on the record jacket, the H.P.D. claimed to be unable to serve the papers. Nothing ever came of the lawsuit, but we got some free publicity and sold out our first pressing (500 copies). We did a second pressing, and it eventually sold out as well.

“The Badge Means You Suck” has been included on Bloodstains Across Texas. Additionally the full single (b-side “Kiss My Machine”) has been included on the Deep in the Throat of Texas compilation and the Outlaws in My Eye - Texas CD. Track them down if you can.
