Sex Pistols - Pirates of Destiny

An audio documentary of sorts, this compilation of odds and ends includes rehearsals, demo recordings, live tracks and interview excerpts with the Sex Pistols' lead singer Johnny Rotten and their manager, Malcolm McLaren, as well as such oddities as the soundtrack of an Australian TV ad and the condemnatory comments of a government official who suggests that death is the only solution to the problem of the Sex Pistols. The band's sound engineer, Dave Goodman, assembled the album, its most valuable parts being the studio outtakes, though the other material is at least amusing. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Discharge - Victoria Hall Hanley Stoke (DVD)

Discharge was formed in Stoke-on-Trent in 1977 by two brothers, Terry (Tez) Roberts (vocals) and Tony (Bones) Roberts (guitar) Roy (Rainy) Wainright and a drummer called Acko (Tony Axon). The name itself was chosen due to it being obnoxious. Tanya Rich was their manager at this time, organizing their gigs. The first single, 'Realities of War' was released circa March 1980 and as Mike Stone did not have a distributor, he sold copies to shops of of the boot of his car. The single got into the top 10 of the Indie Chart in Sounds (a UK weekly music newspaper). This was followed by 'Fight Back', which again hit the Indie Charts.

Kurt Cobain: About A Son (DVD)

I attended a screening of -Kurt Cobain, About A Son at the Seattle International Film Festival. As you can expect with a hometown audience, the audience was ready to fall in love with this film going in. For the most part, the film did not disappoint. The most powerful aspect of the film is the fact that we hear Kurt Cobain's voice speaking his own words, a far better idea than the standard documentary format that features "experts" and fans talking about what made a person great. In the interviews, Cobain is happy, depressed, funny, bitter, excited, exhausted, gracious, resentful, kind, sarcastic ... but always engaging and interesting. It was also powerful to see the images of the towns in which Cobain lived -- Aberdeen, Olympia, and Seattle -- as he talked about different phases of his life. I agree with an earlier poster's comment that saving actual images of Cobain and Nirvana until the end really worked. After all, it is Cobain's voice that is his greatest legacy, and by filling our eyes with images of industrial workers, train trestles, run-down houses, liquor stores, street corners, and so on, the film reminds the viewer that Cobain was a man, first and foremost, and an icon later. And the soundtrack is AWESOME! Kurt talks a great deal about bands that influenced him as he grew up and started writing songs, and many of these artists were kind enough to grant permission to the film-makers to use their music for free. I hope that a soundtrack album is released at some point. My only complaint was the film-makers' choice to include images of places, buildings, and scenes (especially in Seattle) that were not around when Cobain was alive. How much did the Mariners' baseball stadium (which opened in 1999) "shape" the person who became Kurt Cobain, and I somehow doubt that Cobain spent any time at Starbucks. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the film to anyone who loves Nirvana or is fascinated by the man. -imdb.com-

Soundgarden Louder Than Live (VHSRip)

Louder Than Live is a home video by the
American alternative rock band Soundgarden
featuring songs performed live at the Whisky
a Go Go in Los Angeles, California on December
7, 1989 and December 10, 1989. It was released
on May 22, 1990.

It features five live tracks filmed during the
Louder Than Love tour. The live tracks are "Get
on the Snake", "Gun", "I Awake", "Big Dumb Sex",
and a medley of Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" and
Cheech & Chong's "Earache My Eye", with footage
from both concerts mixed together. It also features
footage of the band performing two songs in the studio.
The studio clips are "Loud Love" and "Hands All Over".
It is on this video that frontman Chris Cornell is
seen wearing his infamous silver duct-tape shorts.
The bassist for these performances was Jason Everman.
Louder Than Live was released on VHS only,
with no official DVD version available.

In addition to the home video, A&M released a promo 12"
(on blue vinyl, July 1990) and CD (May 1990) with the
same title, Louder Than Live. The vinyl includes the 5
live tracks from the video in addition to "Beyond the
Wheel". The center label features a close-up picture
of guitarist Kim Thayil's face. The CD came wrapped
in brown paper, duct-taped closed with a yellow and
black sticker that reads "Soundgarden: Louder Than Live".
In addition to the 6 other live tracks, it includes
"Hunted Down". This album has been bootlegged on black
vinyl; genuine copies can be distinguished by the A&M logo.

Stretch Marks, along with Personality Crisis, were at the forefront of the Winnepeg, Canada punk scene in the eighties. Mixing a love for wrestling with Minor Threat-style hardcore, they put out a 7" on their own Headbutt label in 1983 and toured Canada and the United States. 86 Mentality - Goin' Nowhere Fast

Washington D.C. is known for putting out some of the best punk/hardcore bands of all time. If you were to simplify their history into Minor Threat and Bad Brains that would already be the type of track record that any respected trainer strives for. More recently though, D.C. hasn't been putting out as many head turners, that is until you listen to 86 Mentality. They aren't doing anything new. They aren't recalculating the breakdown, or for that matter, having xbreakdownsx. Basically, this isn't the type of music your local mosh crew would rehearse to. On the other hand, if you're into well written punk songs with working class roots and some good ol' anger, 86 Mentality is more than worth your time.

Oh, you haven't heard 86 Mentality before? Well, how perfect for Grave Mistake to release a CD with both of their 7"s and a few live and unreleased songs. Now you can lace up your boots and pounce in. As good as the other thirteen songs are tracks eight through thirteen are where it's at. These songs are taken from the On the Loose EP. Regulations and The Observers have made me recently realize how good newer punk bands can be, and these songs give me the same effect. Although I'm not one for formulaic song writing, when your verse/chorus/bridge/chorus/verse contains all parts that are simple, catchy and contain a fast rock 'n' roll spirit, I'm totally for it. The twelfth song, "Oppression," has the perfect chorus to get drunk and sing-along with your buddies. "Day in, Day out / Oppression oppression / I can't get out / Opression opression," with Steve Clark doing gruff Negative Approach style vocals that you'll find yourself singing along to by even yourself.

Live songs suck. The two live songs included on Goin' Nowhere Fast are the rare exception. Yeah, the recording quality sounds like a good early 80's punk/hardcore recording, but the in-between song talk is fun to listen to (lots of "~censored~"s) and is a testament to how good 86 Mentality is. The previously unreleased songs evidently should've been released as they keep the momentum of the other songs' circle pit spinning. It's nice how the liner notes include some writing by the band on why they didn't include these songs, an explanation of the name (it's not a reference to the year, 1986) and other random ~love~.

Here's hoping that Goin' Nowhere Fast doesn't end up being a discography but a convenient way to listen to 86 Mentality away from home. There's only so many ways I can praise this album, so I think you get the idea. With bands like 86 Mentality, Set to Explode and Lion of Judah coming from D.C., there's no reason why that scene shouldn't become one of the best again. There's nothing wrong with putting emphasis on the "punk" in punk/hardcore. Thanks, 86 Mentality.--scenepointblank

Artificial Peace - Discography

Compilation with Artificial Peace's Outside Looking In LP and Assault & Battery 7". Early DC Hardcore that gets more self-confident and aggressive as it goes on; simple yet powerful music.

In the late summer of 1981, Janelle Brooks started throwing shows in the basement of her parents' house in Potomac, Maryland. Usually these parties would feature five or six bands, who were usually happy to share their gear with each other. Most of their songs were only a minute long, and therefore the sets tended to be really brief. There was a pole in the middle of the carpeted rec-room that everyone danced around, and between bands people hung out all over the house and in the yards. Nobody knew where Janelle's parents were during these throwdowns, but apparently they were ok with it. In September, one of these shows featured the end of three bands: Assault and Battery, Minor Threat, and Red C. Things moved quickly in the punk scene at that point and bands would come and go, so it wasn't a surprise that a new band formed by Pete from Red C along with Mike, Rob and Steve of Assault and Battery played Janelle's next party just three weeks later. Mike's bass drum head had an upside down peace-sign painted on it and the name of the band was Artificial Peace. They were solid and fast and they quickly managed to build one of the largest followings of all of the early bands. They were one of the first DC area bands to play out of town, always making it a point to announce that they were from Bethesda, a city just across the DC line in Maryland. Ian recorded a 19-song demo with them at Inner Ear, and three of those songs appear on the 'Flex Your Head' Sampler. They also released a split 7" with a band called The Exiled on the Fountain of Youth label.

Crumbsuckers - Life Of Dreams

This is definitely one of the best hardcore albums of all time. Bands like the Crumbsuckers, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, and Sick of it All is some of the best hardcore has to offer. If you are a fan of loud, fast music that sends shock waves through your body and starts your heart pounding this is one for you. anyone who is a true fan of hardcore music must have this one in their library.

Probably the best musicians to come out of the NYHC scene (although it shows a lot more on "B.O.M.B."), this record should be in all hardcore/punk fans collection. The re-release is decent, except for the fact that it was taken from vinyl and actually SKIPS in one song (Hub Run).

Adrenalin O.D. - Sittin' Pretty

Adrenalin O.D.'s best stuff with live set. Thank goodness for people like Brian at GTA(Grand Theft Audio) for seeing the greatness in material like this and others and re-releasing them on cd, with lotsa extras. First, this cd gives you the bands first 7", Let's Barbecue, a six song ep released in '83, with some extra songs from the sessions. Song 14 begins The Wacky Hi-Jinks Of... lp, which was 14 songs of pure adrenalin soaked hardcore released in '84, with their now signature funny lyrics about cars and gas stations and the like. Then, as if that wasn't enough, from song 29 to 44 is a live set from, well, I don't know exactly. It's got a song or 2 from their 2nd also excellent(and now also available on Relapse Records with 6 bonus tracks from those sessions, also a must have)album, Humongousfungusamongus, so you know that it's around 84-85, and it's great. All in all if you like speedy hardcore that's tight and funny and better than any so called punk band that you can name that are happening today, then go and get this and anything else you can find by them, it's all great. Well, Ishtar ain't so great, but everything else they did is, so go and find it.--Tim MacKenzie

The Distance - Your Closest Enemies

6 really fast, intense hardcore songs with pissed off lyrics, catchy breakdowns, and heavy mosh parts.

Stand out songs on this CD are "Get Fucked", and "And If", but there isn't one remotely bad song here. If you like some of the other Bridge 9 bands like Sworn In, Panic, or Carry On, then check it out. It's fast, it's angry, it's really catchy, and its definitely worth your time if you like this style of hardcore.
