Loser Life - I Have Ghosts and I Have Ghosts

Loser Life harken back to a simpler time, a time where punk bands didn’t give much of a thought to how the production on the album sounds or how they’ll look in the press photos. A time when nobody had to remind anyone else that music should be more important than the image that promotes it; a time when the music being raw and unbridled was expected, not pleasantly surprising. Well, being that this is 2007, it is a surprise, but that does not detract from the high quality of music that Loser Life bring forth with I Have Ghosts and I Have Ghosts.

Everything about the album seems urgent: wave after wave of distortion and gritty vocals pulsate with a frenetic rhythm underneath, as “Cashing In” perfectly frames. Channeling the ghost of Rites of Spring, Loser Life look at life through the same down-trodden lens. The lyrical outlook isn’t a positive one, but there’s a definite authenticity to lines like "I am hanging on by a thread, and I reject this world." The style of vocals perfectly accents that feeling, and many others like it that are sprinkled throughout the album’s eight songs.

Solid as the themes of the album are, they’re never the focus, but instead the perfect compliment to the pounding drums of “No Eye Contact” and the searing riffs of “Fake Life,” the latter of which rages with such fervor and conviction it’s almost overwhelming. There’s a genuine feeling that at any moment, the band could completely fly off the handle. There’s a controlled chaos to their music, governed by those cascading rhythms and punchy vocals, but it’s that underlying sense that things could be turned upside down just one riff later that truly makes things interesting. “Forget My Name” begins in an unassuming enough manner, but shortly after the quick intro, the quartet is starting a maelstrom of howling vocals and catatonic riffing, before settling into a more reserved, vocal-less groove that simultaneously displays their diversity and refusal to settle into a rut.

Perhaps most impressive at all is that each of these eight tracks has its own identity. The changes in vocal inflection are as pronounced as the variances in chord progressions, and it’s for this reason that each hard-hitting song can stand as well on its own as it can in sequence. And at a meager 28-minute running time, you should have no problem at all letting Loser Life rage from start to finish two or three times. We’re all winners this time around.-punknews-

Loser Life - I Want the World EP

Hailing from Bakersfield, the armpit of California, Loser Life follow up their well received demos and single with I Want the World, a 3 song ep that hones their Articles of Faith/Leatherface brand of melodic and aggressive hardcore. Fueled by all the anger and frustration that comes with growing up in a hostile and ignorant hicktown, Loser Life conveys a certain sense of urgency that many of their fellow Chicago style hardcore worshipers lack. Look for an LP later this year.-loboappolo-

Bedboys- L’Indifferenza Uccide

Although being super-p.c. pacifists, I think BEDBOYS released one of the top european 7" s ever. Little seems to be known about the band and as far as I know this 7" is the bands only vinyl appearance ever. BEDBOYS came from Torino.

Italy had an immensly creative Punk and HC scene with an incredibly high rate of killer records among the vinyl and tape output between 1983 and 1986. Bands like WRETCHED or DECLINO, IMPACT or INDIGESTI have been getting international attention lately but still italian HC seems to be dominated, as far as public recognition goes, by the likes of RAW POWER and NEGAZIONE. All of them great bands (even though the latter two started to suck the big one later in their career), but BEDBOYS is a caliber of its own!-loboappolo-

Formaldehyde Junkies - ...Are a Total Wreck

Early 80s midwest and Boston style hardcore along the lines of bands like the Fix, the Necros, and the FUs. Snotty, raging, fast, and in your face. Features ex-members of Damage Deposit and Any Last Words.

Now, I know that all of you evangelical Christians have been waiting for Jesus to come back, and get all you guys into heaven. Stop waiting, for I have found new, better saviors, who are already right here on earth. They are the Formaldehyde Junkies. Coming out of perhaps the coolest city in the Midwest, Minneapolis, the Junkies play fast, crazy hardcore punk rock not unlike the early `80s D.C. or Boston scenes. Are a Total Wreck, their first EP, is a latter-day masterpiece of punk rock. In a few short minutes, FJ channels the speed of the F.U.’s , the conviction of Minor Threat, and the snotty attitude of Government Issue, without sounding like a crappy tribute band.

It’s basically pointless to dissect the individual songs on the disc, because they all run together. I’m not even sure if there’s any banding between the tracks. Anyway, it’s like one really, really good hardcore song. The guitar sound fills the speakers, and come just close of drowning out the vocals, but manages to leave a little space. The vocals are shouted clearly, without any throat-scraping ~lol~. The lyrics are, for the most part, unintelligible, buried just below the awesome, awesome guitar. The band helpfully included the choruses of each song on the Xeroxed insert, so that you can shout along at their shows.

From this review, it may not sound so great, but that’s just because I’m a ~love~ writer. But please, mail order this (you’re not gonna find it anywhere else). This EP has more heart, and certainly more balls, than any of the major label, corporate-funded pop music on this site. It’s good to see that punk rock can still be dangerous, and that hardcore can still be “hard” without having breakdowns and rapped vocals. I cannot wait until the Formaldehyde Junkies put out an LP.-punknews-

Rat Pack - Selt Titled 7" + Ice Cream, Acid, & Cigarettes 7"

In 1984, RAT PACK singer/founder Matt Ratt was covering the vocal duties for R.K.L., while singer Jason Sears was away on "medical leave". During this time R.K.L. was signed on to record for the now infamous"NARDCORE" album on Mystic Records. Just prior to recording, Jason returned from his leave of absense. So left with the dilema of an album to record, and suddenly no band, Matt was told to throw something together quickly and record for the album anyway. So after a few rehearsals with Chris Rest and Alpo D.(borrowed from R.K.L.) Dave Casillas from STALAG 13 and Mike Torres from NARTHEX STRUCTURE, RAT PACK was born! Although originaly only meant to be a recording project for the NARDCORE album, RAT PACK ended up doing three records for Mystic, 1985's self titled 7", 1987's "Ice Cream Acid and Cigarettes" 7" and 1990's self titled full length Lp. Through the years RAT PACK has gone through long periods of hibernation, with many line up changes...people that have played in and recorded with RAT PACK include current and former members of bands such as NOFX, SOCIAL DISTORTION, STALAG 13, THE ADOLESCENTS, D.I., SUGAR CULT, HOLLYWOOD HATE, FOO FIGHTERS,RUBBER NECK, LAG WAGON, R.K.L., NO USE FOR A NAME, and ME FIRST AND THE GIMME GIMME'S. Once again the sleeping Giant as been awakened, and with the combination of extremely talented fresh blood with an old school sense and style, RAT PACK is close to finishing a full album of brand new music and will be playing out again very soon...consider your self warned.-band's myspace-

Rise and Fall - Hellmouth

Belgiums Rise And Fall brings a fine blend of raw hardcore and groovy new school to the table. Since their kick off two years ago this band has gained a lot of recognition. Through European tours with Converge and Nine and a dozen of other shows, Rise And Fall build quite a strong following in Europe already. "Hellmouth" is the debut full length and I am sure this record will only make this band grow bigger. Man, this is a killer album! 8 Songs long you get nothing but intense and brutal hardcore. Bjorns vocals are way better than before. Not that harsh anymore, but more in the veign of Dwid Integrity and especially with a better sound. That's just great. Add straightforward, but groovy guitar lines and an awesome production to it and we have a winner! One last note, the artwork is wonderful. Done by Dave Quiggle, who's worked for All Out War, Shockwave, Subzero and more. All right, get this one.-asice.net-

Movie: Motorhead - Live Fast Die Old

MOTÖRHEAD are rock's most stubborn survivors. Formed in 1975 by rock legend Lemmy Kilmister, they were once one of Britain's biggest bands. Renowned for being among the heaviest drinking, drug-fuelled womanisers in the business, the band made the 'Guinness Book of Records' as the loudest band ever. In the early eighties they blasted their way to the top of the charts with 'Ace of Spades'. Almost thirty years on, 'Motörhead: Live Fast, Die Old' follows behind the scenes as Lemmy and his band set off on their next U.K. tour. Lemmy is now 57. He still drinks a bottle of bourbon a day and shows little sign of slowing down. But how and why does he keep going? From Lemmy's West Hollywood apartment, crammed with Nazi memorabilia, knives and gothic skulls — to Norwich Student Union, Portsmouth Guildhall and the after gig parties in Newcastle, Manchester and Wolverhampton — the band are booked to play eleven towns in 13 days, living and sleeping on the same bus. Playing the same music, wearing the same clothes and still as controversial as they've always been, can a band really survive without changing?-www.roadrunnerrecords.com-

Shredder - Damnit Riggs

I thought the first release was pretty good, but this release blows me out of the water. Still the same mix of Negative Approach, Voorhees and Infest but way better and harder than on their previous release. This mini cd contains nine shredding songs, one that is a bit slower and has a dragging taste to it. The lyrics are angry and deal with subjects such as fighting and being pissed at everyone, also a great song about Monster Trucks. The artwork is good and the production is hard hitting and crushing. After only a few minutes the record is done, luckily I have a repeat button, because this is the music to listen to while driving on the highway. After a great LP by Sunpower earlier this year, another Belgium bands delivers an old school record Belgium can be proud of. I could write more about this release, but the best thing to do is check out for yourself!-asice-

Circle One - Are You Affraid ?

Circle One were the reason your classmates stayed away from punk rock shows in Los Angeles...and they were the reason you went. It depended on how well you recovered from stab wounds and broken bones. Yes, ladies and gents...what you've heard about this band is true...the gangs, the fights, the insanity...it's all here. Buy this CD if you wanna be the coolest kid in your neighborhood.--Erik from Lancaster

Sometime in 1991, (lead singer) Macias died very...memorably so to speak. Apparently because of his mental problems, he kind of lost it. He threw a security guard off of a bridge, ran into a McDonalds where he punched an old lady in the face and continuously tried to pull people out of moving cars until the cops surrounded him. He charged at them yelling, "God is going to watch you die, pigs!", and they fired. It took 8 bullets to take him down. Now is that a way to go out or what?

Includes thier '83 LP,'80 & '81 demo tracks, a live set from '84, tracks from various comps between '83 and '84 and a radio interview. Great LA Hardcore.

Vile Nation - No Exit EP

EXCELLENT record! Debut EP from Memphis' TN own Vile Nation. Very mean and ugly fast thrash hardcore with a heavy dose of punk. One can't listen to this and not hear the 1st 7'' era of D.R.I and Negative FX and bands of that same time frame and caliber being channeled here. Chris just spews the words out mean and fast and the band keeps up. Scared Straight was a Nardcore Punk band from Simi Valley, California. The band was formed in 1983 by a group of friends and was originally called S.O.F, Scott Radinsky, Mike Thompson, Gary Galaines and Dennis Jagard, who wanted to start a band and enter a "Battle of the Bands" competition at a local skate rink. Graven Image - Kicked Out Of The Scene

GRAVEN IMAGES'S thrash doesn't always hang together, but when it does gel, they have a MINOR THREATish sound. Lyrically, the topics are interesting and, at times, more than a little confused. For example on "Nails and Thorns" they warn punks not to reject Jesus because one might need "Him" someday, and that being an atheist means paving the way for Communism. Mad Society - Self Titled EP

Another historical pre-teen punk record, the 1981 Mad Society EP. It's uncertain how old this kid was when this was recorded, various sources claim Metz was anywhere from 11-13 years old.

"Most memorable about this band was their 13 year old singer Steven Metz. His kid voice is dominating the sound, the other instruments are mixed very low. Musically, this is amateurish garage hardcore..."--flex

In 1981, Mad Society released a five song EP with photography by Gary Leonard (responsible for all the cool Dogtown photos). They also contributed to a variety of compilations, and left a bit of a mark on the scene.

In the whopping eleven months they were together the played all the main “punk” clubs at that time from the Starwood to the Whiskey to the Cuckoo’s Nest; they opened for such bands as The Adolescents, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, X, The Weirdos, and The Plugz. The vocals overpower the rest of the sound; the instruments are mixed very low. Musically, this is amateurish (I know, isn’t all punk amateurish?). Good attempt, but not real impressive. Most memorable about this band were their ages, eleven or twelve...-strangereaction-

McRad - Absence Of Sanity

Good full length, the songs flow together better than the first 12". More of their patented skaterock, a lot of these songs were featured in skate videos from the late 80's. The music is still varied, fast thrashy songs, dark eerie songs, and some reggae too, but for the most part loud rocking punk with a slight metal influence. Excellent production. More crossover and diverse sounding than the first LP. The songs "Weakness" and "McShred" have become classics because of their appearance on the soundtrack for the most crucial sequence of the famous "Public Domain" skateboarding video (released by Powell-Peralta). Music ranges from melodic hardcore to all out thrash to reggae-punk to crossover.--flex

The Clash Live: Revolution Rock (DVD)

This collection of rare live Clash performances was produced by Don Letts. The film features an array of live performances from the band from the late 70s and early 80s. Bonus features include interviews with the band on NBC's 'Live at Five' and 'The Tomorrow Show With Tom Snyder' from 1981. Starting in early March, PBS will be broadcasting excerpts from the DVD.

Some bands are defined by their time period while others transcend it. And while it's true The Clash will always be associated with the British punk scene of the 1970s, their sound has proven to be way ahead of its time and still manages to sound cutting-edge no matter what generation digs on it. This collection of performances from across their entire career will remind fans why The Clash are one of the most important, and perhaps best sounding, bands in rock history. Included here is footage from studio recordings; famed London venues; and a massive, stage-rocking extravaganza held at Shea Stadium.-cduniverse.com-

Nothington – Roads Bridges And Ruins

Hailing from San Francisco, Nothington are Jay (vox/guitar), Chris (vox, guitar), Tony (vox/bass), and Gabe (drums). No strangers to the grind, members of Nothington have previously played in such beloved SF Bay Area bands as Tsunami Bomb, Enemy You, and Try Failing. They toured heavily in support of their first album,”All In”, and made stops on the Vans Warped Tour as well as toured with the likes of Off With Their Heads and Fake Problems. As many of the songs on Roads, Bridges and Ruins retell, Nothington have been homesick for the better part of the past two years since their inception.
