Bones Brigade - I Hate Myself When I'm Not Skateboarding

Fast hardcore punk with straight yelling vocals, simple structures using basic chord progressions and a few quick lead breaks, nice pounding basslines that are definitely leaning towards an old school hardcore breakdown style, good gang backup vocals, all that stuff. It's certainly nothing new, and I wouldn't say they're a mind blowing band, but it's good for what it is, and there are enough subtleties going on to keep it enjoyable. "Hands Off" shows slightly more of a punk influence, tucking more melody away in there and making it catchy on some level, while "Evil Dead" is faster and maybe more of a crossover thrash direction, and they close with an awesome cover of "No Reason" by Minor Threat. The production is a little raw, but not in a problematic way. I love the bass presence, and the vocals also sound good, whereas the drums and guitars are a little rougher around the edges. It's not a bother, though. The guitars could use less high-end texture in some ways, and the drums could be thicker or something, but the end result sounds pretty damn good to me, I've definitely heard worse from comparable bands. The layout's not bad, sticking to black and white with some red, and using one live photo alongside illustrations of skull-faced skateboarders and stuff. The lyrics are a mix of personal content and a more humorous side that tends to deal with, of course, skateboarding, as well as a few tracks more geared towards the hardcore/punk scene. Good stuff. I'm really into the energy here. I think the performances could be tighter, there are a few unnecessarily sloppy areas (nothing over the top, but still), though pound for pound this is a pretty damn good record.--aversi
